In his broadcast last night, Bill O’Reilly ran a story expressing his outrage over the fact that a secular sign, posted by the Freedom From Religion Foundation, was permitted next to a holiday tree and a nativity scene at the Capitol Building in Olympia, Washington. BillO gave Governor Christine Gregoire's phone number over the air and urged his viewers to complain en masse. Consequently, Governor Gregoire's office is now being swamped with phone calls.
Follow me over the fold for more details and a call to action.
If you can stomach it, here's the clip in which BillO launches his attack on free speech and tolerance:
Here's the official response:
Gregoire, a Democrat, and Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna put out a joint statement Wednesday noting that the federal lawsuit led the state to create a policy allowing groups to sponsor a display "regardless of that individual's or group's views."
"The U.S. Supreme Court has been consistent and clear that, under the Constitution's First Amendment, once government admits one religious display or viewpoint onto public property, it may not discriminate against the content of other displays, including the viewpoints of nonbelievers," the statement said.

Governor Gregoire has been getting deluged with 200 calls an hour, plus emails. So if any of you are moved to call her office and support her decision to leave the sign up, I think it would be great to let her know that not everyone agrees with O’Reilly. Be sure to let her know if you live in Washington state. And if you can think of any other friends or family who might be interested in calling, please pass this along.
